About the Course
This course embraces a wide spectrum of studies with both classical and popular music genres - taking in, as it does, options in Bands, Jazz and Popular Music and Music Technology. Composition and Performance are central to our course, Composition being encouraged by the presence of experienced composers on the staff and Performance through the University ensembles and well established liaisons with club and performing venues around Manchester.

The 4 year programme permits entry to students insufficiently qualified for admission onto the 3 year programme. Each student successfully completing the extra foundation year is entitled to progress to the 3 year programme, and normally will do so. The emphasis in the foundation year is on learning basic Study Skills, Harmony, Aural Training and a full programme of Performance. The academic slant of the course takes into account students interested in Classical, Jazz and Popular music specialisms.

The curriculum starts with core study areas - Composition, Performance, Analytical and Historical Studies.Year 2 onwards offers a wide range of options to students including those in Composition (8),History (6) Performance, Recording, Music Technology , Arts Administration. ,Latin Percussion and more.

All students are offered weekly 1 to 1 instrumental performance lessons free of charge with one of a large team of specialist tutors active as professionals in their own field. Students audition to join one or more of the prestigious University Ensembles - Brass Band, Wind Band, Big Band, Jazz and Pop Ensembles and Choir. Performance studies are backed up by a wide range of Masterclasses by visiting professionals in both the Classical and Jazz/Pop fields. These have included Tommy Smith, James Morrison, Bill Nelson, and Fred 'Thelonius' Baker.
