About the Course
This course embraces a wide spectrum of studies with both classical
and popular music genres - taking in, as it does, options in Bands, Jazz
and Popular Music and Music Technology. Composition and Performance are
central to our course, Composition being encouraged by the presence of
experienced composers on the staff and Performance through the University
ensembles and well established liaisons with club and performing venues
around Manchester.
The 4 year programme permits entry to students insufficiently qualified
for admission onto the 3 year programme. Each student successfully completing
the extra foundation year is entitled to progress to the 3 year programme,
and normally will do so. The emphasis in the foundation year is on learning
basic Study Skills, Harmony, Aural Training and a full programme of Performance.
The academic slant of the course takes into account students interested
in Classical, Jazz and Popular music specialisms.
The curriculum starts with core study areas - Composition, Performance,
Analytical and Historical Studies.Year 2 onwards offers a wide range of
options to students including those in Composition (8),History (6) Performance,
Recording, Music Technology , Arts Administration. ,Latin Percussion and
more.
All students are offered weekly 1 to 1 instrumental performance lessons
free of charge with one of a large team of specialist tutors active as
professionals in their own field. Students audition to join one or more
of the prestigious University Ensembles - Brass Band, Wind Band, Big Band,
Jazz and Pop Ensembles and Choir. Performance studies are backed up by
a wide range of Masterclasses by visiting professionals in both the Classical
and Jazz/Pop fields. These have included Tommy Smith, James Morrison,
Bill Nelson, and Fred 'Thelonius' Baker.
Prizes available include the Harry Mortimer Award for best brass instrumentalist,
The Elgar Howarth Shield for Composition, the Goff Richards Award for
outstanding Jazz/Pop instrumentalist, and the Malcolm Arnold Award . Prizes
for academic excellence are offered by the British Reserve Insurance Company.
Level 0 (4 year pathway)
Core modules: Case Studies 1 and 2, Music Theory 1 and 2 (the
latter incorporating Recording Studies and Computer Notation), Aural and
Transcription, Individual Performance, Ensemble Musicianship.
Level 1
Core modules: Analytical and Historical Studies, Classic Forms
of Tonal Music, Practical Analysis, Band History, Compositional Techniques
1 and 2, Aural and Transcription, Individual Performance, Performance
Skills (two from Conducting, Improvisation, Latin Percussion), Band Programme,
Ensemble Musicianship.
Level 2
Core modules: Analytical and Historical Studies,Band History,Structure
and Form, Performance Skills(Two from Conducting, Improvisation, Individual
Performance).
Composition options: Two from eight subject areas (20 Century,
Jazz Orchestra, Stage, Brass Band, Wind Band, Commercial Music, Songwriting,
Contemporary Jazz).
Associated Studies: Recording, Computer Studies, Arts Administration,
Music Theatre, Band Programme, Ensemble Musicianship.
Level 3
Core modules: Analytical and Historical Studies (Darmstadt, Revolution
and Reaction).
Composition options: Two from eight subject areas (20th. Century,
Jazz Orchestra, Stage, Brass Band, Wind Band, Commercial Music, Songwriting,
Contemporary Jazz) No repeat of Year 2 options.
Individual Performance.
Elective One and Two from: Composition, Arranging, Dissertation,
Performance, Conducting, Recording, Arts Administration, Music Theatre.
Assessment
Assessment is by practical and written examination,course work and
continual assessment.

taken up leading roles in the music world as performers, conductors, composers
arrangers and teachers, producers, and arts administrators.

Entry requirements
Applicants for admission to the BA(Hons) Music Degree course will normally
be 18 years of age by 31st December in the year of entry. The normal minimum
educational requirements entitling an applicant to be considered for admission
to the beginning of the course are as follows:
- 1. Five GCSE/GCE passes, including two subjects at Advanced level.
One of the 'A' level passes will normally be expected to be in music;
OR
- 2. Four GCSE/GCE passes, including three at Advanced level. One of
the 'A' level passes will normally be expected to be in music; OR
- 3. A Scottish Certificate of Education with passes in five subjects,
of which three are at the Higher grade; OR
- 4. A Scottish Certificate of Education with passes in four subjects,
all at the Higher grade; OR
- 5. Other qualifications deemed to be acceptable in lieu of those
specified.
All students should demonstrate at audition a high level of performing ability
(Associated Board Grade 8 or equivalent) together with a particular interest
in any type of band music. Applicants with talent but without the formal
entry requirements are encouraged to apply. Mature students with relevant
experience are welcome.
