Derek
B Scott
BA, MMus, PhD, PGCE. Professor of Music at Salford University Derek Scott has worked professionally in radio, TV, concert hall and
theatre. He is the author of the book The Singing Bourgeois (Open University
Press), editor of Music, Culture and Society: A Reader (Oxford University
Press), and author of numerous articles concerning music and ideology.
He has been at the forefront in identifying changes of critical perspective
in music and sociology. He is the General Editor of Ashgate's Pop and
Folk Series, and a member of the Editorial Boards of Popular Musicology
and the internet Critical Musicology Journal. He was a founder member
of the UK Critical Musicology Group in 1993 and organizer of their first
major conference in Salford in 1995. He is also a composer whose works
include two symphonies for brass band.
