David King was born in Australia and moved to the United Kingdom in 1982. He was educated at Avondale College in New South Wales and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where he undertook performance studies specialising in cornet and trumpet.

David has won many awards as an instrumentalist both in Australia and the UK, including the Australian National Cornet Championship in 1982, the North of England Solo Championships in 1983/4/5 and the British Open B flat Cornet Solo Championship for five consecutive years (1987-91).

Between 1983 and 1989 he was Musical Director and the driving force behind the rise of 'Swinton Concert Brass' from Fourth Section to British Open Champion status before accepting the appointment as Professional Conductor of the 'Black Dyke Mills Band' - the youngest conductor to be invited to this position. During 1990 and 1991 he directed Black Dyke to become Yorkshire Champions (1990) and the European Champions (1990 and 1991) as well as conducting two very highly acclaimed CD recordings.

He was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Norwegian band, 'Manger Musikklag' in 1990 and directed them to four consecutive wins (1994-97) at the Norwegian National Championships, Grieg Hall, Bergen.

In 1994, David accepted the position as Principal Conductor of the 'Yorkshire Building Society Band' establishing them as one of Britain's finest brass bands, winning the European Brass Band Championships five times in the space of six years (1996/7 & 1999/2000/2001), the British Open Championships in January 1998 and September 1999 and the All-England Masters title in both 1999 and 2000. He is also principal conductor of the University of Salford Brass Band, with whom he has toured Holland, Belgium, Hungary, the former USSR, Ecuador and Brazil.

David King is a member of the Institute for Social Research and Head of Performance Studies in the School of Media, Music & Performance in the University of Salford, Europe's largest centre for specialist education in Band Musicianship. In 2000, David King completed his Doctorate in Musical Arts (DMA) - the first recipient of a Performance research doctorate awarded within the British University sector.
