In 1999, the Department of Music merged with the Department of Media & Performance to form the new School of Media, Music & Performance within the Faculty of Arts, Media & Social Sciences.

The School of Media, Music and Performance, with some 900 students, integrates academic study with extensive performance and production work. This proven approach has established the University of Salford at the forefront of European media and music education. The Faculty's Adelphi complex is situated only a short walk from the centre of Manchester with all its dynamic media and music activity.
The School is fully equipped with 24/48-track recording studios, video edit suites, music, drama and dance workshops, electro-acoustic, television and radio studios. Bands, ensembles and production groups, including the School's own Aspects Theatre Company and Groove Machine, give over 300 public performances annually at local venues, on tour in Britain and abroad and at the Edinburgh Festival. Programming produced through the School and broadcast by the BBC, Granada Television and cable is considerable.
