Brass Band Research Archive The main strength of the Archive lies in its primary research sources in what is already becoming a valuable collection of journals and scores forming the core of the study material. Already in the collection are copies of Brass Band News dating b ack to the first edition in 1881 (probably many of them the only copies still in existence). Also housed in the Mortimer Suite is the unique collection of scores and band parts from the library of the former Northern Dance Orchestra. This would seem to provide a natural link with the University's Popular Music Research facilities. There is a growing collection of music of historical interest including band parts for test pieces for many of the Belle Vue contests between 1875 and 1916. The Archive aims to build this into a unique collection of books and journals connected with the Brass Band's past, along with other appropriate items such as scores with historical significance, old programmes, pamphlets, historical recordings and old instruments, all of interest to the researcher in Band Musicianship. Backruns of The British Bandsman (from 1964 to the present) and British Mouthpiece (from 1980-1990) are stored in Adelphi Library in bound volumes.Copyright ©1998-2001 School of Media, Music & Performance, University of Salford.
