The name Salford University has
become synonymous worldwide with Band Music since the foundation of Europe's
first School of Band Musicianship.
Salford University is recognised
as producing the most prestigious conservatoire style Brass Band in Europe
and has attracted students from as far afield as Australia, Japan, America
and Scandanavia, as well as from all over the United Kingdom.
The School of Band Musicianship at Salford presently has 148 students studying
on courses such as BA(Hons)
courses and MAs in Performance
and Composition. Salford's
Music Department (which
also offers the world's first BA(Hons)
Degree in Popular Music & Recording and BSc(Hons)
in Music, Acoustics & Recording) is the largest in any British University
and has recently been awarded the top, quality assessment for Excellence.
Music at Salford works alongside the prestigious Media
Performance and Production Departments in the Faculty of Media, Music
and Performance (with a total of over 800 students).
The Salford University Brass Band is renowned for its work with contemporary
composers many of whom, including Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Sir Malcom Arnold,
Laszlo Dubrovay, Anthony Burgess, Howard Goodall and Philip Sparke, have
written music especially fo r this band.
The Salford University Brass Band has toured widely throughout the world
and within the last three months has presented British style Band Music
to large audiences in Brazil and Ecuador.
Professional Patrons/Advisors to Salford's Music courses include Elgar Howarth,
George Martin, Roy Newsome, Goff Richards.
